My name is Linda Wiskerchen, and I am a licensed clinical social worker
with 18 years experience and passion working in the mental health field.
I specialize in the treatment of families and young children who are
having behavior issues at home, in school, and in the community, with
individual, group, and family counseling.
- Strengthen children's social skills and appropriate play skills (turn
taking, waiting, asking, sharing, helping, complimenting).
- Promote children's use of self-control strategies such as effective
problem solving steps
- Increase emotional awareness by labeling feelings, recognizing the
differing views of oneself and others and enhancing perspective taking.
- Boost academic success, reading and school readiness.
- Reduce defiance, aggressive behavior, and related conduct problems
such as noncompliance, peer aggression and rejection, bullying, stealing
and lying.
- Decrease children's negative cognitive attributions and conflict
management approaches.
- Increase self-esteem and self-confidence.
- I act on the belief that a child is the most precious of all human
beings, and the ability to withstand the emotional and social challenges
as a teenager, clearly rests upon a caring relationship between parent,
teacher and child.
- Collaborate with parents to make changes in the home that will bring
about positive behaviors in children.
- Teach proactive behavior management as well as play interaction and
communication skills that improve the quality of the parent-child (or
parent-teacher) relationship.
- I work directly with the children to teach them appropriate social
skills, emotional regulation and problem-solving skills.
“Dinosaur School” is one of the award-winning child social skills counseling
interventions I use that helps build social skills, develops the ability
to manage emotions, and practices problem-solving strategies so children
can be successful in school and with friends. “Dinosaur School”
is being implemented in a small group format with 4-6 children in my
private practice office in the Ahwatukee section of Phoenix.
A
friendly, elderly dinosaur known as “Dina” teaches the children the rules
to success at home and school. They also learn to be caring and
gentle with Dina and share their successes each week with her. Children
also develop connections within the group and with 2 other puppets named
Wally and Tiny Turtle. Wally helps them learn to deal with feelings
and use positive solutions. Tiny Turtle helps them to go in their
“shells” to calm down. Parents see positive changes in their children
and also learn about Dinosaur school themselves so the benefits of the
group can be enhanced through the continuation of the lessons.
