Children and families often face challenging times and it can be difficult finding support. If your child is highly emotional, anxious, withdrawn, or exhibiting undesirable behaviors at home, school, or in the community, counseling can be the help and support you’ve been looking for. With young children, Ms. Wiskerchen engages her child clients through interactive play based interventions that are fun, creative and informative. This allows the counselor to utilize the same “language” as the child, listening to their feelings and encouraging them to work through their struggles, while working together to form solutions and new skills.isis.

Pre-teen therapy (ages 8-12)

Children and families often face challenging times throughout the developmental stages, and Ms. Wiskerchen is here to help. If your child is struggling with peer relationships, is experiencing challenges transitioning into a new school or grade, is adjusting to changes within the family, or is showing symptoms of anxiety, depression or anger, counseling can be a highly effective way for your child to find solutions. Your child will work individually with Ms. Wiskerchen who will help them process their challenging situation, identify unhelpful thought patterns and actions, while encouraging your child to find alternative, more balanced ways of thinking, while simultaneously increasing healthy coping and communication skills and improving resiliency. Ms. Wiskerchen often incorporates structured activities and games, making counseling fun and interactive, but most of all, helpful. Ms. Wiskerchen also believes that it is essential for children to take what they learn during a counseling session into their daily life, and often will assign various self-help activities between sessions to help children and parents implement positive change at home and school.

If behavior challenges are occurring at home and/or school, Ms. Wiskerchen can also support families by helping parents implement behavior plans to help facilitate positive change at home/school; motivating children to change previous unhelpful behavior patterns, and while also encouraging children to utilize new skills developed in counseling sessions.

Teen Therapy

Ms. Wiskerchen is committed to helping your teen and your family during this potentially difficult developmental stage. Is your teenager withdrawn, sad, lonely, depressed, or anxious? Is he or she experimenting with drugs or alcohol? Is your son or daughter running with an undesirable peer group or engaging in negative behaviors? Does your teen have trouble fitting in, or suffer from low self-esteem? Is your intelligent teen unmotivated and underperforming in school? You’re not alone. Teenagers and parents of today are dealing with unprecedented levels of pressure and stress, which can be particularly challenging for both teens and their families. During adolescence, teens begin to test their parent’s rules, ethics, authority, values, morals, and just about everything else that is important to their parents. Healthy development during the teen years depends on and is greatly influenced by the teen feeling supported, understood, respected, and trusted but more often than not, the teen pulls away from his parents just when he or she needs guidance most – this is where counseling can help.

Teens are often open to accepting help from a trustworthy adult in a safe environment where it can be easier for them to discuss complicated issues and feelings they may not feel comfortable sharing with parents. Utilizing a cognitive behavioral approach, Ms. Wiskerchen can help teens discover their unhelpful beliefs and actions, and work with the teen to create positive change. This method helps teenagers to develop better judgment and healthier decision-making skills so they can begin to consider future goals and plans and live a more balanced life. Counseling can help teens move past the hardships of adolescents, encourage positive change, and help teens begin to interact with their families in healthy ways once again. The goal is to reach teenagers and their families before they’re in crisis.
